Crestor is a drug used to lower high blood pressure in people with high cholesterol and other conditions.
A new study shows it may help reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack and other complications in people with high cholesterol and other conditions.
The study,, was published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine.
"We know that statins are widely used to lower high cholesterol," said study author Dr. Steven Nissen in a news release.
The study involved more than 3,800 people with high cholesterol who took the drug Crestor, the brand name for the statin, as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
The study compared the cholesterol-lowering drug to placebo.
"We found that statin use may be as effective as diet and exercise in lowering the risk of disease in patients with high cholesterol, compared with placebo," said Nissen in a news release.
Studies of the drug have found that it can be used by patients who take it for several months to help manage their cholesterol.
A number of other drugs have also been used to treat high cholesterol, including the drug-maker GlaxoSmithKline. It has also been prescribed for several other conditions, including heart failure, high blood pressure and stroke.
The findings are published online in, the journal of the American Heart Association.
The study was funded by the drug maker, Pfizer, the maker of the popular cholesterol drug Lipitor.
A follow-up to the study showed the drug reduced the risk of a stroke, heart attack and other complications for people who took it for several months.
Other studies have also suggested that it can help lower cholesterol levels in people with high cholesterol and other conditions.
The drug works by blocking a substance in the body called HMG-CoA reductase, which helps control cholesterol production.
However, some doctors may not be aware of the connection between the drug and heart disease.
Dr. Michael J. Sullivan, director of the Division of Cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic and one of the study's authors, said: "The fact that statins are commonly used to lower high cholesterol may not apply to people with cardiovascular conditions, because patients taking these drugs do not have the same level of cholesterol. They are, however, not at risk for heart disease as they do with high blood pressure and diabetes."
Marc B. Schwartz, who is not a part of the study, said he is "confident" that the study's results could have important implications for people with high cholesterol, but added: "It's important to keep in mind that statins are widely used to lower high cholesterol, but that the effect of statin use may be as effective as diet and exercise in lowering the risk of disease in patients with high cholesterol."
